Primary Education (Years 4-6)

Committed to Success – Building the Foundations for a Lifetime of Success

Raising Standards for Every Child

At The Tuition College, we believe that every child, no matter their background or the school they attend, deserves the strongest possible foundation for their education.

For some students, that means earning a place at a selective grammar school. For others, it means starting secondary school in the top sets, where lessons move at a faster pace, expectations are higher, and opportunities are greater.

Our experience has shown that students who begin secondary school in lower sets often make slower progress. Teachers in those groups can spend more time managing behaviour and less time focusing on high-level teaching. That’s why we work to raise standards early, helping children build the knowledge, confidence, and discipline they need for long-term success.

We don’t just prepare children for exams. We prepare them to thrive in the next stage of their education and to approach every challenge with confidence, curiosity, and ambition.

Our Focus in Years 4–6

Our Primary Tuition programme supports every learner, whether they are preparing for the 11 Plus or focusing on building strong skills for SATs and secondary school. Each child receives the right balance of structure, challenge, and encouragement to help them grow in confidence and ability.

We know that every learner is different, so we take time to understand their goals and provide the teaching and guidance that helps them achieve their very best — in the classroom and beyond.

11 Plus Preparation

Our 11 Plus programme has helped generations of children secure places at Greater Manchester’s leading grammar schools, including Altrincham Grammar, Manchester Grammar, and Withington Girls’ School.
With an outstanding pass rate of over 99 percent, our results are the product of structured teaching, early preparation, and the experience of qualified teachers who know how to bring out each child’s best.

Many of our students begin their 11 Plus journey in Year 4, where they start establishing the strong foundations needed for later success. Lessons at this stage focus on core skills in English and Maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, and developing reading comprehension, spelling, and problem-solving ability. The emphasis is on understanding, not just memorising, so children gain confidence and fluency from the start.

In Year 5, we move into targeted 11 Plus preparation, with lessons structured around exam-style questions and timed activities. Students practise under realistic conditions, strengthening their reasoning, comprehension, creative writing, and arithmetic skills. They also learn essential exam techniques, including how to manage time effectively and how to stay calm and focused under pressure.

By Year 6, our focus shifts to refinement and readiness. Students complete full-length mock exams under timed conditions and receive detailed feedback on performance. Teachers work closely with each learner to address any remaining gaps, reinforce key strategies, and build the confidence needed for exam success.

We cover every component of the 11 Plus curriculum, including:

  • Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • Mathematics
  • English comprehension and creative writing
  • Timed practice and exam technique

Our approach is classroom-based and teacher-led, combining structure, encouragement, and challenge in equal measure. We know that early, consistent preparation leads to confident students, and confident students achieve exceptional results.

SATs Preparation and Transition to Secondary School

Not every child follows the 11 Plus route, and that’s perfectly fine. For many families, Year 6 is one of the most important stages in a child’s education, as it sets the tone for how confidently they move into secondary school.

At The Tuition College, our SATs preparation programme helps children strengthen their skills in Maths and English so they can finish primary school with confidence and pride. Lessons are structured, engaging, and taught by qualified teachers who know how to help children succeed. We focus on building understanding, closing any gaps, and giving every child the belief that they can do well.

In our lessons, students:

  • Master key topics in Maths and English grammar, comprehension, and writing
  • Gain confidence through timed practice and focused feedback
  • Improve their accuracy and stamina when working under test conditions
  • Learn how to think critically and solve problems independently

SATs are just one part of the picture. When students move to Year 7, many schools ask them to take CAT (Cognitive Abilities) tests. These assessments help determine which sets children are placed in for subjects such as English, Maths, and Science. The results can influence the pace and challenge level of their lessons right from the start of secondary school.

That’s why our Year 6 programme also prepares children for this next step. We help them develop their reasoning, reading comprehension, and analytical skills so they begin secondary school ready to make a strong start.

By the time our students leave us at the end of Year 6, they’re not only prepared for their SATs but also ready to face new challenges with confidence, independence, and enthusiasm for learning.

Skills for Success in Secondary School

At The Tuition College, we believe that success is about more than passing exams. We want every child to develop the mindset, habits, and confidence they need to thrive in secondary school and beyond.

Our lessons strengthen the key skills that make a lasting difference, not just academic knowledge, but the qualities that help children grow into motivated and independent learners.

Through our teaching, students develop:

  • A solid understanding of core subjects and the ability to apply their knowledge with confidence
  • Independent learning habits and the self-discipline to take ownership of their progress
  • Motivation and ambition to set goals and work hard to achieve them
  • Resilience, confidence, and a positive attitude when faced with new challenges

By focusing on these essential skills, we help children move into Year 7 ready to learn, ready to contribute, and ready to succeed.

How We Work with Families

Every new student starts with a thorough academic assessment (£30 fee, redeemed against the first lesson). We then:

  1. Share detailed feedback on their current performance
  2. Understand your goals and aspirations for your child
  3. Recommend the best tuition pathway to achieve those goals

We keep parents fully informed, with regular feedback and opportunities to discuss progress.
