The Tuition College – Anti-Bullying Policy

1. Policy Statement

The Tuition College is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where every student can learn free from fear, intimidation, or harm. Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated.

This policy outlines how we define, prevent, and respond to bullying, ensuring compliance with safeguarding guidance and Ofsted expectations.

2. Definition of Bullying

Bullying is behaviour by an individual or group that is:

  • Repeated over time,
  • Intended to hurt another person physically or emotionally,
  • Creates a hostile, intimidating, or unsafe environment.

Bullying can take many forms, including:

  • Physical: hitting, kicking, pushing, damaging property.
  • Verbal: name-calling, insults, threats, racist or discriminatory remarks.
  • Social: spreading rumours, excluding others from groups.
  • Cyberbullying: sending offensive or threatening messages, sharing inappropriate images, or using social media to intimidate.

3. Prevention

At The Tuition College we actively promote positive behaviour and respect for others by:

  • Embedding a Code of Conduct for all students (as set out in the Terms & Conditions).
  • Reinforcing values of kindness, respect, and tolerance during lessons.
  • Supervising students before, during, and after lessons to minimise opportunities for bullying.
  • Teaching students about online safety and respectful communication (linking to our E-Safety Policy).
  • Encouraging students to speak up if they witness bullying, either as a victim or a bystander.

4. Reporting Bullying

Bullying is everyone’s responsibility to challenge. Concerns may be raised by:

  • A student who is being bullied.
  • Another student who has witnessed bullying.
  • A parent/guardian.
  • A tutor or member of staff.

Reports can be made:

  • Directly to a tutor or staff member.
  • To the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
  • Through a parent/guardian contacting the College.

All reports will be taken seriously, recorded, and investigated promptly.

5. Responding to Bullying

When bullying is reported, staff will:

  • Listen and reassure the student.
  • Record the incident in the Bullying/Behaviour Log.
  • Investigate promptly by speaking to those involved.
  • Take action, which may include:
    • Mediation and restorative conversations.
    • Parental meetings.
    • Behaviour warnings and monitoring.
    • In serious or persistent cases, temporary or permanent removal from the College.
  • Where safeguarding concerns are identified, the DSL will follow safeguarding procedures.

6. Support for Students

  • Victims of bullying will be offered reassurance and support.
  • Perpetrators will be helped to understand the impact of their behaviour and supported to change.
  • Where appropriate, referrals may be made to external services (e.g., counselling, safeguarding agencies).

7. Parent/Guardian Role

We ask that parents/guardians:

  • Encourage children to treat others with kindness and respect.
  • Report any concerns about bullying to the College promptly.
  • Work with staff to resolve issues fairly.
  • Support the College’s sanctions and restorative actions where required.

8. Monitoring & Review

  • All bullying incidents will be recorded in the Behaviour Log.
  • The DSL will review patterns of behaviour and ensure appropriate actions are taken.
  • This policy will be reviewed annually and updated in line with best practice and safeguarding guidance.
