Achieve practical, work-ready qualifications accepted by employers and colleges.

What Are Functional Skills?

Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths (Levels 1 and 2) are practical, realworld skills assessments highly regarded by colleges, employers, and employers. They assess your ability to communicate, solve problems, and apply knowledge effectively.

Assessment Structure

English Functional Skills

Assessed in three separate components:

Reading
Writing
Speaking, Listening & Communicating (SLC)

You must pass all three components at your level to obtain the qualification certificate.

Maths Functional Skills

Assessed in three separate components:

A single exam paper (on-screen or written) covering numeracy and problem-solving — you’ll receive a Pass (P) or Unclassified (U).

Can Unit Results Be Carried Forward?

Yes — for English only, depending on the awarding body:

  • City & Guilds (English) allows carry-forward of individual component passes (e.g., Reading) as long as they are at the same level and supported by QA processes.

Edexcel also permits retakes of individual components while carrying forward passes in the others.

No — for Maths:

  • Since it is a single combined exam, you either pass or you’ll need to retake the entire paper.
