Date: 29/09/2025
Review date: 29/09/2026

1. Introduction

At The Tuition College, the safety and wellbeing of all students is our highest priority. We are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and we expect all parents, carers, staff, volunteers, and students to share this commitment.

Safeguarding is defined in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and Working Together to Safeguard Children as:

  • Protecting children from maltreatment.
  • Preventing impairment of children’s health or development.
  • Ensuring children grow up in safe and effective care.
  • Taking action to enable all children to achieve the best outcomes.

2. Our Commitment

  • Provide a safe, nurturing, and respectful environment for all students.
  • Ensure all staff and tutors are DBS checked and trained in safeguarding.
  • Act promptly on concerns about a child’s welfare.
  • Work in partnership with parents, carers, schools, and external agencies.
  • Promote the welfare of children through our curriculum, activities, and ethos.

3. Responsibilities

The Tuition College will:

  • Follow statutory guidance, including the Children Act 1989 & 2004, Education Act 2002, and the Equality Act 2010.
  • Maintain clear safeguarding procedures for reporting and managing concerns.
  • Record and monitor all safeguarding concerns securely and confidentially.
  • Train staff to recognise and respond to signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation, bullying, radicalisation, or online harm.
  • Have a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) who is responsible for child protection.

Parents/Carers are expected to:

  • Ensure we have up-to-date emergency contact information at all times.
  • Inform us immediately of any changes in family circumstances that may affect a child’s welfare.
  • Collect children promptly and ensure safe drop-off (see T&Cs).
  • Work with us to support children’s wellbeing, attendance, and behaviour.
  • Raise safeguarding concerns directly with the College if worried about any child.

Students are expected to:

  • Treat themselves and others with respect.
  • Speak to a trusted adult (parent, tutor, DSL) if they feel unsafe, worried, or uncomfortable.
  • Behave responsibly online and offline, following our e-safety guidance.
  • Report bullying, abuse, or unsafe situations immediately.

4. What Parents & Students Should Know

  • All staff have a legal responsibility to act on concerns about the welfare of any child.
  • If a child discloses something concerning, staff cannot keep secrets. They must share the concern with the DSL.
  • Concerns may be shared with social services, police, or other agencies if necessary.
  • We will always seek to work with parents where possible, but in some cases concerns may need to be referred without parental consent if a child is at risk of harm.

5. Recognising Abuse & Harm

Abuse can take many forms. Parents and students should be aware of the main categories:

  • Physical abuse – hitting, shaking, or causing harm.
  • Emotional abuse – persistent criticism, rejection, or exposure to distressing experiences.
  • Sexual abuse – exploitation, assault, or exposure to inappropriate materials.
  • Neglect – failing to meet basic needs such as food, clothing, supervision, or medical care.
  • Other safeguarding concerns include: bullying, cyberbullying, peer-on-peer abuse, radicalisation, county lines, exploitation, online grooming, and exposure to harmful online content.

6. Online Safety

  • The Tuition College promotes safe, responsible use of technology.
  • Parents are encouraged to monitor home internet use and discuss online safety with their children.
  • Students must not use phones or devices in lessons unless authorised for learning purposes.
  • Inappropriate online behaviour (e.g., sharing harmful content, cyberbullying) will be treated as a safeguarding concern.
